Over the past five years, she has donated more than $19 billion to over 2,000 organizations—without the typical restrictions that often accompany large gifts. Unlike many wealthy donors, Scott believes in giving freely, trusting nonprofits to allocate funds in ways that best serve their missions.
Transforming Nonprofits, One Grant at a Time
A recent three-year study by the Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP) underscores just how transformational Scott’s giving has been. While some skeptics worried that such massive donations could lead to financial mismanagement or operational struggles, the study found overwhelmingly positive outcomes. Many recipient organizations—especially those focused on social justice, human services, and education—have been able to expand their reach and impact significantly.
A New Standard for Philanthropy
While traditional foundation grants average around $123,000, MacKenzie Scott’s donations typically amount to $5 million—providing nonprofits with the financial stability to plan, expand, and innovate without the constant pressure of short-term funding gaps.
The Bezos Divorce and Scott’s Wealth
Scott’s fortune stems from her 2019 divorce from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, through which she secured a 4% stake in the company. As of 2025, her net worth is estimated at approximately $31 billion, fluctuating with Amazon’s stock price. Despite her immense wealth, she has remained committed to redistributing her fortune in ways that create lasting impact.
Scott later married Dan Jewett, a former science teacher, but the couple quietly divorced in 2023. She has four children and keeps her personal life largely private, focusing instead on her philanthropic mission.
Changing the Philanthropic Model
One of the most revolutionary aspects of Scott’s giving is its simplicity. Unlike traditional donors who require lengthy applications, detailed reports, and strict spending guidelines, Scott trusts organizations to use the money where it’s needed most. She identifies groups making a difference and provides them with the resources to continue their work—no strings attached.
Thoughtful, Strategic Giving for Long-Term Impact
Even organizations that received grants from Scott in 2020 have, on average, used only about 60% of the funds so far. This indicates that nonprofits are being intentional and strategic, ensuring the money stretches over time to create lasting change.
Elisha Smith Arrillaga, vice president of research at the Center for Effective Philanthropy and co-author of the study, believes Scott’s approach should serve as a model for all donors, regardless of their financial status. “We can all do this kind of giving,” she explains, emphasizing that it’s not about the size of the donation but its impact on the recipient.
