When you first start out playing a game with so many moving parts as League of Legends there’s a lengthy period of adjustment where you’re just trying to wrap your head around the basics. Diving into a massive pool of champions, on a map that’s dotted with objectives, while facing an opposing team that’s ready to take you down – it’s an intimidating experience. With time and practise, however, the anxiety fades and you start to understand the flow of a game.
It’s here where you reach a turning point. Here you start to look at all the ways – big and small – you can improve your game further. And so begins the research, the trips to guide websites and regular visits to discussion forums to find the best advice. There’s a lot of useful information out there, but in our latest interview with League of Legends pros, we get them to reveal the top tips every player should know in order to become a better player.

Interestingly, it seems two categories stand out: mechanical skill and mental fortitude. For players such as Derek “zig” Shao, he feels it’s important that you stick with just a couple of champions so you can focus on mastering some of the more important aspects of the game. One of those is farming, which Alex “Xpecial” Chu says should be something you can do without thinking – it should be second-nature. If you’re looking for a target to judge yourself on, Tristan “PowerOfEvil” Schrage recommends aiming for ten CS per minute.
As for approaching League of Legends with the right mindset, the pros’ advice is to pay attention to your own play rather than finding excuses in the play of others. Sure, it can be tempting to take out your frustrations on the decisions or mistakes of team-mates but ultimately that helps no one. “At the end you don’t have control over other people and you only have control over yourself. So you should just try to fix all your mistakes and try to improve and not focus on things you can’t control,” says Fabian “Febiven” Diepstraten.
